The Hub Mount, consisting of the Main Part and the Top and Bottom Part and the calliper mount are made from 2014 T6 Aluminium Alloy the material is strong and light yet not too brittle.

The initial observation that sparked off the design of the new braking system was made during a training session for children using wheelchairs. In order to go downhill users were trained a number of techniques, including traveling backwards. The process seemed far more complicated than necessary.

The Retrofit Wheelchair Brakes were developed after extensive user centred research was carried out with, adult and child wheelchair users. Wheelchairs are only fitted with a parking brake. The system uses disc brake technology to provide variable braking with minimal force. I carried out my user-centered research by working with user groups, creating research strategies, conducting user interviews, usability evaluations, and focus groups in order to effectively structure my design towards my intended demographic.
